Poker is a game which has been evolving for centuries, although it’s growth has certainly sped up in the last few decades.

There have been times in history where one poker game has become the most popular for a significant amount of time, with poker games such as Five Card Draw, and Seven Card Stud having been popular in previous years. Currently, it is Texas Holdem that remains the most popular poker game, as you are unlikely to find a cardroom which does not offer a Holdem game.
There are other interesting variations of standard poker games which are played in home poker games everywhere, with different twists on a three card poker game being popular. Stud games are still relatively popular, with Five Card Stud, and Seven Card Stud being offered at many online poker rooms. The popularity of Holdem is so great though, that it can be difficult to find many online tables in these poker games.
Omaha is another popular form of poker, and is similar to Holdem in many ways, as the same board cards and hand rankings still apply. The differences in Omaha rules are that each player starts with four cards instead of two, and must use two of those cards to make a hand. You couldn’t use a single ace of diamonds to make a Flush if there are four diamonds on the board for instance, because you have to use two cards from your hand. This may seem a little bit complicated, but with almost any form of poker, you only have to put in some time playing a game and the rules soon become second nature.

One of the things that sets amateurs apart from poker professionals is the ability to understand your odds of hitting cards in the deck and which of those are certainties, possibilities, and doubts for putting you in the lead.

There is a saying that if you are ever uncertain but in a position where you feel compelled to call, always leave yourself outs in poker. Poker percentages are not only used in preflop calculations of course, you are often put to the test on the flop, turn or river. Reading poker boards well will always be your best friend in these scenarios, and understanding your poker opponents likely holdings is important.
With these factors in mind you can calculate the cost and balance these outs and their certainty to win you the pot against other deciding poker factors. Sometimes you can push it all in preflop knowing you are a 66% to 34% favourite in the poker hand, but often it isn’t enough to simply do this as often as you can manage. Poker decisions should be based on so many different variables, that other complexities such as position, current investment in a pot, and previous poker player tendancies are hugely important.
It is also important to look at poker hands objectively after the event, and not be disheartened by the outcome, the sole aspect of any poker hand that is important, is that you played it right. These points distinguish the good from the great and you should never feel too upset by losing a key poker pot, provided you know you played it well.

Many poker players would tell you that you should always be raising with big pairs preflop, and in most cases this poker strategy is correct.

There are however, some instances where playing big pairs a little bit differently can pay off. If you are on the button or in the blinds, a slightly different approach preflop can ensure you extract the maximum value from these poker hands. Provided the poker players acting before you have folded around, you can be certain that flat calling with a big pair from the button will at worst, lead to a three way pot.
It is of course good to isolate poker players with big pairs, but a three way pot can sometimes be dangerous. The risk of a three way pot is balanced out by the fact that some of the time, you will be faced with a raise from one of the poker players in the blinds. This is of course exactly what you want with a big pair because you can come back over the top with a reraise, disguising your poker hand in the process.
Ending up in a three way pot might be considered a risk of sorts, but we must remember that some of the time it will result in a bigger pot won after the flop anyway. Poker strategy is often about balancing potential risks and rewards in plays, and playing big pairs from different positions is no different. It is preferable to slow play them against poker players you know to be aggressive of course, and if you do choose to flat call from the button or small blind with them, try not to play them this way all the time. It is important to mix up your plays as much as you can with poker.

There has always been a difficulty for me in attaching much importance to physical tells in live poker, as I used to use them to try and appear nervous when I was strong with some success against certain players a few years back.

Many players will tell you that physical tells are important however, but you can certainly say they are overstated in the general idea of poker for those who have never played it. The poker film ‘Rounders’ famously talks about knowing a mans tell and how much this can help you in the game, and having watched this film last night before a poker tournament, I began to look upon the idea in a new light. The problem with looking for tells in players is that most of the poker players you sit down against are experienced, and will go to great lengths to give nothing away when they bet. This does not go for every poker player however, and one less experienced player last night proved something.
Some poker players have tells which are blindingly obvious, but you simply wouldn’t notice unless you were looking for the correlation between a particular action, and the hand they turn over at the end. Down to four players and with our less experienced poker player on my left, I realised that whenever I started picking up chips to raise his big blind, he picked up some of his chips and started playing with them. Three times I took his big blind in this way, until on the fourth time, when I picked up chips to make a raise…. He sat perfectly still with his arms folded. I then folded, he raised the pot and ended up showing (A,K) at the end of the hand. So having previously written about physical tells being overrated, I felt it necessary to point this out. Whilst you might sit down at several poker tables and not see any tells from poker players, but keep looking, because you are bound to find one eventually.

Texas holdem has emerged as the true favourite of poker players over the past couple of decades, with a very high number of WSOP and other worldwide poker events being Holdem events.

Considering the fact that Holdem was not always the favoured game of poker players, it would be reasonable to assume that there will come a time when a new favourite poker game emerges. It is entirely possible that the signs of a shift are already here, with increasing numbers of pro players turning to Omaha as the game where poker players make more mistakes. This fact is not surprising when you consider how long most serious poker players have been playing Holdem for. The fact is, that so many poker players have developed strong game theory in Holdem, that it is considerably more difficult for anyone to make money there, than it is in Omaha.
Omaha has an immediate allure to the Holdem poker player in the fact that the general theme of the game is along exactly the same lines. The only real difference for new players to grasp in terms of rules, is that you have four hole cards instead of two, but you can only use two of these to make your poker hand. As you might expect, the result is that players get involved with all kinds of hands and go chasing multiple draws, pairs and other potential poker hands that will usually win in a Holdem game.
This is an exciting change to Holdem in many ways, and the loose, draw happy play, can be capitalised on by those that know Omaha poker well. It would be difficult to see Holdem fading into obscurity, of that there is little doubt. However, for the all action, enjoyable poker game that it can offer, and the points about easier money being made here, you could see how Omaha might carry the poker torch on from Holdem.

Poker rooms which are dedicated entirely to free poker are a difficult thing to find, the main reason for this being that poker rooms make their profit from real money being pushed across the virtual felt. So there really isn’t much money to be made from this type of site generally speaking, but there are still some places that offer these free games.
To play online poker games click here!
This type of poker room will obviously offer no cash incentives for play at the tables, and often the only currency to change hands is points. Most poker players in the online poker world will be looking to either play for enjoyment, to make money, or most often, both. This means that such free poker sites do not attract a great following, and could not fill their tables overly quickly. They do fulfill players needs of the enjoyment of playing poker, but without the excitement of there being money at stake too.
This means that real money poker rooms will always have an edge over free sites. Free poker sites do offer an interesting outlet of games for those who wish to learn the basics of poker, just as any free game does. It is always better to further your understanding of a game through free play before moving on to small stakes games, and free poker sites are certainly good for offering this. Otherwise though, free sites are probably doomed to never enjoy the same player flow through their sites, as they simply can’t offer everything the players need.
